Best 11 Low Calorie Alcohol-Free Wines

One of the benefits of drinking alcohol-free is the reduced number of calories per drink.  With a clever switch from a traditional alcoholic glass of wine to an alcohol-free glass of wine, you could save nearly 200 calories per serving.

There’s a simple reason that going alcohol-free can save you so many calories, but not all alcohol-free wines are created equal.  If you’re not careful, you could end up drinking a lot of sugary calories if you choose the wrong alcohol-free wine.

To help you pick the best low calories alcohol-free wine, I’ve pulled together a list of our lowest calorie alcohol-free wines in one place.  With reds, whites or rosés and sparkling of non-sparkling, there really is a low calorie alcohol-free wine for everyone.

Why Alcohol-Free Means Low Calorie

Why does going alcohol-free mean your glass of wine is lower in calories?

The simple reason is, alcohol contains almost as many calories per gramme as fat with nearly 7 calories per gramme. This means that a large glass of wine can contain as much as 211 calories – only 19 short of a Mars Bar.

For most people, the idea of sitting eating several Mars bars in the evening isn’t something they would do (although a few chocoholics might be tempted).  However, drinking more than one glass of wine in the evening is definitely something a lot of people would do. All these hidden empty calories soon add up making it very easy to pile on the pounds when drinking alcoholic drinks.

By removing the alcohol from your glass of wine, you’re also removing all those empty calories from your daily intake.  You still get the experience and enjoyment of a glass of wine, but not at the expense of your waistline.

Alcohol Free Wine & Sugar

Removing the alcohol from wine does not always guaranteed that being alcohol-free will be low in calories. This comes down to the sugar content of some alcohol-free wines, with some containing up to 18g of sugar in a glass. Due to the way it’s made, some wines will have sugar added at the end of the wine blending process to give it additional mouthfeel. However, as you’d expect with this additional sugar comes extra calories. That’s why it’s always worth checking the label to see the full nutritional information on the wine you’re drinking.

Our Top 11 Low Calorie Alcohol-Free Wines

I’ve had a look at a number of alcohol-free wines and chosen the 11 that are low in calories. I know doing the top 11 instead of the top 10 is a rather unusual, but the last two wines were tied in calories so I thought I’d include both in this list

The number of calories given for each wine is for 125ml serving (i.e. small glass).  There’s a wide variety of wines listed,  including white, red and rose along with both sparkling and non-sparkling.  No matter what your preference, you’ll find the perfect wine for you on this list.
